School Day

8.55 am ‑ 12.00 noon (morning session) (20 mins playtime)

1.00 pm ‑ 3.15 pm (afternoon session) (15 mins playtime, for R and KS1 only)

Parents have a legal duty to ensure that their child attends school at the appropriate time and that children are collected from school within reasonable time of the school finishing.

The school will take responsibility for children before school opens from 8.45am until it finishes at 3.15pm. Before and after then, there will be nobody to supervise pupils.  Pupils who arrive at school knowing that supervision arrangements are not in operation are there at their own risk, during this time, the responsibility for the safety of those pupils rests with the parent/carer.  However, should a member of staff be present and a dangerous situation develops, the member of staff will attempt to intervene or to seek assistance as the situation requires.

Breakdown of the School Day

Nursery

Nursery sessions run from 8.55am to 11.55 am.  Nursery is open in the mornings only.  More detailed information is available in the Nursery prospectus (available to download here).

Reception/KS1 and KS2

Children should be in school each morning at 8.55 for registration.

In R and KS1 the teacher will be in the classroom from 8.45am approx and will welcome the children in to the classroom from this time.  KS2 children can be on the school site in the rear playground area from 8.45am when a member of staff is on duty.  Any child on the school site prior to that is the responsibility of their parent/carer until the member of staff is on duty.  The only exception to this is for Y6 pupils who are monitors.  They have permission to arrive from 8.30am and to report to the class teachers.

If your child is late please take them to the front door and not to the classroom or side doors as these should remain locked once the children have all entered the building with the teacher after the bell.  The school secretary will be able to see your child to class, mark them in the register and check if they need to be signed in for a school dinner.

Assembly is from 9.05 – 9.25

Morning lessons are from 9.25 to 12 noon with playtime from 10.30 to 10.50

Lunch break is from 12 noon to 1.00 pm.

Afternoon lessons run from 1.00 to 3.15, with a break for Infants only from 2.30 to 2.50 pm.

School finishes for the day at 3.15 pm. 

Curriculum

Our curriculum is developed from the National Curriculum and is broad and balanced. We teach the core subjects English, Maths, RE, Science and ICT and foundation subjects, history and geography (humanities), music art DT, and a modern foreign language (French).

We will be adapting our curriculum during 2013-2014 in preparation for the introduction of the new National Curriculum in September 2014. Our Year 3/4 children will begin to work from the new curriculum in English and Maths from the Spring term 2014.

English

Literacy which is the teaching of speaking and listening, reading and writing is taught every day in a specific lesson, and aspects of literacy are taught at different times of the day integrated within other subjects.  The school follows the National Curriculum.

Language is learnt in three ways:

1. Speaking and Listening        2.Reading which begins with Letters and Sounds teaching    3.Writing, which includes grammar and punctuation and handwriting and spelling.

It is our aim to develop the children’s knowledge and skills in all these areas and great encouragement is given to them to communicate and express themselves in a clear manner both orally and in a written form.

In terms of reading progress we try to cater for all the children’s individual needs. With voluntary parental help, it is possible to hear children read frequently as well as to develop reading in a variety of ways in lessons other than just ‘reading’. For twenty to thirty minutes of each day all children are encouraged to read silently to themselves, read with a ‘buddy’ or take part in reading activities to stimulate interest in books, whilst the teacher works with a small group on their reading tasks called ‘Guided Reading’.

In the early years and KS1 classes we base a lot of the reading development around the Collins ‘Big Cats’ reading scheme and the Oxford Reading Tree series, although these are supplemented by other books at colour banded levels to give breadth to the early language programme.

All children are taught ‘Letters and Sounds’ which is the ‘synthetic’ approach to phonics teaching and is important for reading and spelling.  All children are regularly monitored to assess progress through phases 1-6 and children in Y1 will be tested at the end of the year using the national test to assess their progress.

As children grow older we expect their reading to progress and so we use a wide variety of activities and materials to develop their reading skills. In the KS1 classes a greater variety of books is introduced and attention is given to the locating and extracting of information from non-fiction, narrative and poetry texts.

In all years of education form nursery up, we encourage children to take reading books home to help parents become involved in helping their child to read.  We ask that all children have the school customised book bag, which can be purchased from the uniform supplier.  For order forms and current costs please see the school secretary.

Handwriting

We give high consideration to presentation of all written work and hand‑writing is encouraged to be neat and tidy. Letter formation is taught in the early years and from year two children are taught in a joined cursive style. We follow a scheme so that all classes are consistent. Roller ball ink or fibre tipped pens may be used by pupils whose handwriting is neat and well-formed in their last two years at school.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

In meeting requirements of the National Curriculum and the new grammar test being introduced by the government, attention is also given to formal grammar which includes:  Sentence Construction, Spelling, Punctuation and Syntax.  This is taught through school as part of literacy lessons and as specific sessions.  This may also form part of weekly homework and will be differentiated as appropriate for the age group and specific needs of your child.

Poetry and a general love of the sounds of spoken language are also encouraged. All children are encouraged to listen and enjoy being read to and with and story reading by the teacher usually happens on a daily basis.  Drama and role play is also an important part of our teaching.

Maths

The school uses the National Curriculum guidance and the Primary Framework, plus a variety of maths resources to deliver the teaching of maths. A high degree of number work is of an oral nature through mental maths sessions.  In addition where possible maths is integrated and taught through other subjects, such as data handling in science. Maths is taught to pupils every day. Attention is given to the understanding of mathematical concepts rather than just working through mechanical processes.

In addition to the structured work in maths where the children learn methods and written calculations, time is given to practical work and inquiry based activities.  All the children have access both at school and home to an online maths programme called ‘Mathletics’. The school has a written calculation policy which can be copied for parents if requested.

Multiplication tables are taught from early stages of learning by ‘counting in 2s’ in reception and Y1 and more formally learning tables from Y2 upwards or when they are ready if this is earlier.  Tables as well as number bonds for 10 and 20 are expected to be learnt by all children.

Science

Science is an important part of the school curriculum. It is taught either as a separate subject or integrated into other areas of the curriculum. The course is planned in such a way that each child receives a well balanced and varied approach to science.

The main aims are to ensure that children are prompted to enquire, explore and observe so that they ask questions about themselves and their environment. They are encouraged to test or experiment and then record their findings as accurately as possible in whatever way is appropriate to their age and ability. Finally, they draw conclusions from their work.

By studying science in this way the children acquire knowledge, skills and a rational approach to their environment.  The local area is used where possible to study aspects of science.

History and Geography -Humanities

These curriculum areas are often taught in an integrated way combining both knowledge of people and places.  We encourage all our children to put themselves in the place of an historian or geographer and learn the skills needed to find the information, thus extending their knowledge.  Where appropriate each class will hold a theme day where children can relive a little of the life of children in the past and we ask parents/carers to help with creating a suitable costume for the day. If parents/carers have particular knowledge or skills in humanities we would encourage them to share them with the children –just let us know.

We aim to develop inquiring minds and to learn about the environment around the school. As the children progress we broaden out to further afield environments and compare them with our own. From time to time, children will be taken on educational visits outside the school as part of their studies. Parents will be informed of details and we would like to extend a warm invitation to any interested parent to accompany us.

Art, Craft and Design/ Design and Technology

We aim to give young children a wide experience of artistic materials. Emphasis is on developing techniques and skills, but presentation of work is considered important. High priority is given to displaying of children’s work, and with older pupils, finishing and mounting work is considered an important skill.  We invite local artists in to school and help the children to develop an understanding of different art forms through use of the internet and where possible gallery visits.

DT is within the framework of the National Curriculum. Children are asked to think creatively, design models or pieces of work and discuss the implications and practicalities of them, before producing the finished products. Evaluation is always part of the unit of work.  D and T also includes food technology at a simple level.

Music

Music lessons are taken by class teachers and we use a scheme called ‘Music Express’.  In addition when funding allows we provide additional opportunities for the children to meet ‘real’ musicians –drumming, fiddle players etc in an effort to enjoy and appreciate music.  We have been running a very successful summer term ‘Pop’ choir for the last two years.

The singing of hymns and children’s songs is encouraged throughout the school. So too is the opportunity to have music lessons which are given by our music specialist who has a short time in school each week. In Y3 all the children learn to read music and play the recorder.

PE and Games

It is expected that all children take part in Physical Education unless there is a medical reason not to so do. Parents can have their child excused by telephone request, or by sending a note.

We aim to develop physical and athletic skills as well as agility and self confidence. The school is equipped with modern and safe gymnastic equipment. The emphasis is not always on competition, but on enjoyment, satisfaction and participation, however we do recognise the need to encourage determination and the desire to succeed and therefore we regularly enter children into competitions and team events against other local schools.  The school has an excellent record in gymnastics and athletics, representing the South Lakes for the past 2 years at the county gym competition.

Swimming at Ulverston pool takes place usually in the spring and summer terms and depending on swimming ability would be for Y3 and Y4.  Once the children can swim 25m confidently they have achieved the National Curriculum expectation.

Modern Foreign Language

French is taught to all children in KS2.  There is a clear progression of topics and vocabulary through the year groups, with the older children reinforcing and adding to their basic knowledge in Y6, aiming to be able to write, read and speak with some confidence when greeting others, talking about themselves and their families.  We use the Cumbria approved scheme and online support.

Information and Communication Technology

At present the school has 15+ computers (some of them – laptops and netbooks) in classrooms and 20 networked computers in our computer classroom on the balcony. In January 2014 17 iPads were purchased for use throughout the school including a group set to be allocated on a rota to each class. Each class and the nursery has an interactive whiteboard.  All pupils in the school have the opportunity to use the computer room at least once a week and work with ICT in their own classrooms every dayThere is a scheme of work which builds on skills and knowledge through the school.

e-safety

We take e-safety very seriously and regularly remind the children of how to keep safe on the internet. We hold an internet safety day every year and have a detailed scheme of work which covers all aspects of esafety throughout the school. We are a KIDSAFE school and have a trained teacher who leads this. All children know how to report inappropriate content on the web and know who to tell should this happen.  We have a code of conduct for using the internet and all children are asked to sign this along with their parents. We take part in anti-bullying week each November and cyber-bullying is always revisited to help children to understand the dangers and how to get help should they need it.

Learning in and from the Outdoors

Where possible, lessons are planned to take advantage of our wonderful setting and to enable the children to apply their skills in different situations.  The basic skills in English, maths, science and ICT as well as other curriculum areas can all be enhanced through outdoor learning and in some cases taught directly through it.  An example of this would be ratio in maths and Vikings in history taught through cooking outside by making a basic bread recipe to cook in a fire.  The proximity of the Morecambe Bay, local woodlands and the fell give us opportunities to learn more about nature and to get involved in local projects

We regularly take the children in to the town of Grange to research and to study the town.  The local businesses welcome the children and support the school in many ways.

Religious Education

Grange School is a Church of England ‘Controlled’ School.  Religious education is taught as in all county primary schools and covers all denominations. Parents who desire their children to receive Roman Catholic denominational teaching should contact the head teacher. We follow the Scheme of Work/Guidance from the Cumbria LA and the Diocese of Carlisle (http://www.carlislediocese.org.uk/) . The main religions studied are Christianity, Judaism & Hinduism. We also study aspects of Islam and have decided to focus on Buddhism as our locally represented religion from 2013.

Parents who do not wish their children to receive any type of religious education have a right to withdraw them from both religious services and religious education. Parents who wish to take such action should express their desires by contacting the head teacher in accordance with section 25 of the 1945 Education Act.

The school day starts with a twenty minute worship/assembly which is of a broadly Christian outlook and is usually taken by the head or senior teacher.  Once a week or fortnight the class teacher leads a more intimate form of class worship-this enables the children to have time to reflect on their own class needs and for them to be able to contribute more confidently in this smaller environment.

Each week we hold a ‘Good Work’ celebration assembly which is open to parents when a class is showing their work or there is a special event.  At this assembly house point certificates are given out, the trophy for class attendance and cloakroom tidiness is presented and other achievements are celebrated (these may be things from out of school such as swimming trophies).

Sex and Relationships Education

Sex education will be taught to Year 6 pupils within the context of a health education programme as part of National Curriculum studies. The specific areas covered will include growing up, the changing of the human body, including menstruation, leading up to conception. The lessons will be delivered by the school nurse (probably over a period of approximately 3 x half hour sessions) with the class teacher present or by the class teacher. Follow up questions that may arise will be answered sensitively by staff.

Parents, who wish to withdraw their children from sex education, or have reservations about it, must consult the head teacher, which would be in strict confidence.  Parents will be informed before the start of these sessions. Health Education forms part of our science work in school for all children and is taught progressively through school.
