Reading

Early reading-our school uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds as our scheme which is supported with Collins Big Cat e-books and sets of books (kindly donated by our PTA FroGS). Reading begins in Nursery where children share books and remember stories through linked activities, role playing and joining in with the adults as they read aloud. The children experience quality texts and we ensure that they know and can re-tell the stories. Listening and copying are very important early skills and the children are helped to hear sounds, recreate them and sequence them. They work towards hearing initial letter sounds and blending these for reading at the start of their reading journey.

'The school has prioritised reading, right from the start of the Nursery Year. Reading sits at the heart of the curriculum. Staff have undertaken training to enable them to become experts in the teaching of early reading. Across the school there is a consistent approach to the teaching of phonics. Teachers ensure that books match the sounds that pupils know. Regular checks allow the school to identify pupils who may be falling behind. Staff give these pupils the help that they need to keep up with their peers. The focus on reading continues through the school. Older pupils have a good knowledge of a variety of authors and genres.'
